In my opinion, the Great Leap Forward is probably the worst mass casualty event in the 20th century. The 30 million deaths were mostly caused by famine and most surprisingly, were not intentional. It all started with Mao's new economic plan after his 5 years plans were criticized. China was organized into 28,000 communes and man power was mainly used to projects such as dams and irrigation. I would say its the worst due to the sheer number of deaths in such a short time period. Hitler caused more deaths if you count all the casualties of the second world war, however those were not completely linked to Hitler. Also, the length of World War II was 6 years, while the Great leap Forward lasted a mere 4 years. The deaths that Stalin caused was about the same. He caused more deaths than the Great Leap Forward if you include World War II, however less if it's not included. I think that although the Great Leap Forward was not intentional and seems less cruel than the other mass casualty events, it definitely has the most deaths in the shortest amount of time.

The Reason the Japaneses were some what responsible for communism in china was because they invaded the Chinese territory on Manchuria in 1931-32. When sun yat sen, the leader of republic china dies, Chiang Kai Shek became the leader in 1925 with Mao Zedong. Mao Zedong was the propaganda leader who had a very strong want for communism. Chian tried to terminate any communist parties but Mao ran away leading to the long march. During the time of the Japanese occupation of china, it was the communist party that did the majority of the fighting against the Japanese. The KMT nationalist government under the power of Chiang Kai Shek did very little fighting against the Japanese, they were more focused on the communists. |
